Find out more about Mont Blanc, the highest summit in Europe and a major alpine tourism region!
Rising 4,810 metres above sea level, Mont Blanc (French for ‘White Mountain’) is the highest mountain in the Alps, and is a major European tourism destination. The Mont Blanc massif stretches across France (Haute-Savoie and Savoie), Italy (Aosta Valley) and Switzerland (western Valais). A road tunnel through the mountain, linking Chamonix in France to Courmayeur in Italy was completed in 1965. Ownership of the summit has always been contentious, but an agreement reached between Napoleon III and Victor Emmanuel II of Savoy in 1860 places it contiguously on the French-Italian border.
Majestic and sometimes perilous, Mont Blanc is a mecca for hikers and mountaineers the world over. Some describe it as the ‘birthplace of mountaineering’, and its cultural significance is undeniable. For these and other reasons, Mont Blanc has been nominated for World Heritage status.
Tens of thousands of tourists flock to the massif each and every year. For those with experience in high-altitude climbing, the summit itself is not difficult to ascend; some 20,000 climbers find their way to the top each year. That said, Mont Blanc is not for the faint-hearted and deaths are not uncommon. Of course, there’s more to Mont Blanc than mountaineering! Mont Blanc is a great place for a family holiday, corporate retreat or trip with friends. –The wide range of outdoor and nature-based activities means there’s plenty to do and something for everyone. Activities include bushwalking, mountain biking, skiing and snowboarding, ice skating, swimming (in the pristine alpine lakes), boating, fishing, wakeboarding and water-skiing, windsurfing and sailing, canoeing and kayaking, and much, much more!
